Richmond, Virginia is upping its game where photography is concerned. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is leading the way. In 2021Dr. Sarah Kennel was brought on board to be the first curator of photography for the museum. The CEO of the VMFA, Alex Nyerges, is himself an accomplished photographer.
Currently, at the VMFA, there are two special photography exhibits. First there is “A Long Arc: Photography in the American South since 1854” which was co-curated by Dr. Kennel and Gregory J. Harris. And then, Nyerges has curated the show, “American, born Hungary, Kertész, Capa, and the Hungarian American Photographic Legacy.” Both shows are at the museum until the end of January 2025. If you can't get to Richmond, both exhibits have amazing catalogues available for sale. Here's a link to the shop: https://vmfashop.com/books-media.html
In addition to what is happening right now, the future is bright as well. A major expansion is being planned for the VMFA and this will include designated space for photography galleries. Right now there is just a small hallway up on the third floor for photographs and it will be great to have more space.
I think it is also important to note that around town, numerous galleries feature photography. For instance, there is a great show at the Bond Millen Gallery currently. You can read more at this link: https://www.bondmillengallery.com/exhibitions/current/
There is also a gallery dedicated solely to photography, the Candela Gallery. You can read about current exhibits at this link: https://www.candelagallery.com/ If you can’t get to Richmond to visit Candela, you’ll note from their website that they also publish photography books, which they’d be happy to sell you.
Whether in person or through a book, I hope you will enjoy the photography exhibits that are in Richmond.
