The Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds is one of the most well-known principles of photographic composition. I often find it helpful to view the “rule of thirds” grid in my camera as I compose an image. This rule divides the frame into nine equal rectangles, creating natural points of interest for placing subjects.
I particularly like how the Digital Photography School explains not only what the rule is, but also why it works so effectively. Just as importantly, it emphasizes that the rule is meant to be broken when the image calls for it.
